Prepare infrastructure before the route.

Entry, payments, apps, and timing for mainland China and Hong Kong. Practical guidance with applicability notes and primary sources.

Important

Rules depend on citizenship, passport type, bank, and trip purpose. This guide does not replace official requirements checked before departure. Mainland China and Hong Kong are separate jurisdictions.

01 · Entry

Check status by passport, duration, and purpose.

“Visa-free China” is not enough for a group. One delegation can include different citizenships, official passports, and entry purposes.

Before booking, build a citizenship matrix, dates, entry points, and each participant’s business activities.

Do not merge mainland China and Hong Kong requirements in one checklist without separate verification.

Mainland China: entry rules depend on citizenship, stay length, and purpose — verify via NIA and consular sources.

Hong Kong: separate border and visa regime. A mainland China visa may not cover HK entry for all participants.

02 · Payments

No single payment method should stand alone.

International cards, mobile wallets, and cash carry different limits. CIS and international bank scenarios also depend on issuer and current compliance.

  • Set up apps and identity verification before departure.
  • Run a small test payment before the main trip.
  • Prepare backup: card, cash, and project-lead support.
  • Do not promise one QR code “works everywhere.”

Mainland China: Alipay/WeChat Pay often need local setup; international cards are not accepted everywhere.

Hong Kong: Octopus, cards, and mobile wallets behave differently from mainland China. Plan separately.

03 · Digital environment

Maps, connectivity, and work tools are logistics.

Some international services are restricted in mainland China. Corporate access, eSIM/roaming, local maps, and comms channels should be aligned with IT and security before travel.

Mainland China: Google Maps, WhatsApp, and some corporate VPNs may be unavailable — prepare local alternatives.

Hong Kong: broader access to many international services, but corporate policies still need advance alignment.

04 · Timing

The calendar can move budget more than design.

Golden Week, Spring Festival, major fairs, and city events affect hotels, transport, venues, and production crew availability. Check adjacent weeks too — mainland China and Hong Kong calendars can diverge.
